Volunteer with Youthline

Volunteers play an essential role in making sure Youthline is able to help the thousands of young people that contact us each year. We are always looking for passionate people to join our teams of generous, enthusiastic and awesome volunteers across the country.

We are also really interested in those looking to get involved in other ways, whether it be helping out in our offices, assisting at events or doing something in your school. Everyone has different skills and interests and we love hearing from anyone interested in helping us out!

If you are looking to get involved with Youthline, find out where the centre closest to you is located or more on how you as a volunteer can help out.

If you are interested in finding out more, please email us on supportcentre@youthline.co.nz

What is the volunteer pathway?

Stage one - Personal Development.

This is a stand alone course which is a lively and varied programme, using experimental activities, games, discussions and a bit of interesting theory to give you lots of opportunities to find out more about yourself and build better communication and relationship building skills.

It is also a great for helping you to learn more about working in a team, managing difference and conflict, building self-esteem and confidence and goal setting and trust. It runs on a 8 week programme meeting either one evening a week or one morning and this includes one Saturday session. This could is available for anyone 17+.

Stage two - Basic youth and community counselling skills

This next stage of training focuses on developing relationship skills and learning basic counselling skills for our youth helpline, working in the hub, txt counselling, email, youth events and other first point of contact work. It runs for 12 weekly sessions either one evening a week from 7pm - 9.30pm and this includes one Saturday session.

Fast track

This is a course combines stage one Personal Development and stage two basic youth and community counselling skills course into one programme and allows participants to  fast track their development towards becoming a volunteer helpline counsellor. This programme runs for eight weekly Saturday sessions from 10am - 4pm.

Stage three - Marae Noho Weekend

This residential programme takes place once a year at Te Puea Marae in Mangere and is an essential part of the Youthline training. It focuses on our development of Youthline in Aotearoa within a bicultural context.

Stage four - Transition training

The focus is on continuing personal and skill development in order to move forward to becoming a solo helpline volunteer counsellor, connecting with young people in the Youthline hub where we take calls, txts and emails from young people and members of the community. Transition groups start out weekly and then become fortnightly after seven sessions.
